10 Introduction to Your Email Services

All of your email services are handled through the Imail mail server of your BLUEHILL.com NT Solution.

Your BLUEHILL.com NT Solutions’s email service operates much like a post office. It can send, forward, deliver, and receive electronic mail messages. It sends outgoing mail immediately, via its Internet connection, to any recipient you wish. As long as the message is sent to a valid email address, your mail server will determine the correct route to get it there.

The following chapters explain how to administer your email services through our intuitive collection of Web-based tools known as the Imail Administrator and Imail Mail Client.

10.1 Setting Up an Email Client

Your mail server comes set up with one email account. This account, called the Primary or Administrative email account, uses the same username and password as your administrative login, and has the email address username@yourdomain.com, where username is your administrative username and yourdomain.com is the domain name of your BLUEHILL.com NT Solution.

With the BLUEHILL.com NT Advantage Pro, you can add an unlimited number of email accounts or “boxes” wherein you can receive and store email messages until they are picked up and deleted. BLUEHILL.com NT Advantage(25) or Advantage Plus(50) owners can purchase additional POP accounts for a monthly fee.

Email messages that are stored in accounts on your mail server can be picked up and read using an email client program such as Outlook Express or Eudora etc.

To access your mail server from your desktop computer, you must first obtain and configure an email client program. There are many free clients available, any of which will work with your email service. For Windows users, we recommend Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, or Eudora. You can choose among several different email clients to download for free from the BLUEHILL.com Web site at http://www.4domains.com/webstuff/files.html.

Once you choose to use an email client, you will be required to provide some basic information in order to send and receive email. Most clients require you to provide the following information:

  • Your email address.

  • The name of your email account.

  • A password to access your email.

  • The incoming (POP3) name of your email server.

  • The outgoing (SMTP) name of your email server.

Because your mail server acts as both an incoming and an outgoing mail server, you can simply enter your mail.yourdomainname in both cases if asked to specify both an incoming and an outgoing mail server. You should consult the documentation that accompanies your email client program for complete instructions on how to configure it. Some major email client configuration setups are avalible at http://www.4domains.com/viewlets

10.1.1 Using POP on your BLUEHILL.com NT Solution

Your account is configured to use the POP protocol. POP (Post Office Protocol) is a simple incoming mail protocol that can be thought of as a “store-and-forward” service. With POP, your email is saved in a mailbox on your server, and is transferred to your email client when you check it. Once they are downloaded, your email messages are no longer maintained on the server.
